Victory adds five players to Derby squad
Melbourne Victory has added five players to an extended squad for the Melbourne Derby at Etihad Stadium on Saturday at 7.30pm AEDT.Scott Galloway, Giancarlo Gallifuoco, Jason Geria and Connor Pain are back from Olyroos duty, while captain Carl Valeri is fit again after missing last week's 0-0 draw with Adelaide United.
Valeri, who was a late withdrawal from the Round 1 squad against Adelaide with a minor knee injury, has trained strongly this week, with two players to be omitted before kick-off.
"The body is good," Valeri said on Thursday.
"Melbourne Victory is blessed with depth so why take a little risk when someone else can do the job and that is what happened.
"It's a long season, so I didn't want to jeopardise that."
Valeri, who was appointed captain last month, will wear the armband in the Hyundai A-League for the first time on Saturday night.
"To captain this club is fantastic," he said.
"We've got 25,000-plus members, which is honestly outstanding and there are a lot of leaders in the team, both young and old, which helps me.
Victory will be without vice-captain Leigh Broxham in the Derby after he was controversially sent off against United.
"We're going to miss Broxie because he is a big leader in this team and a player I love playing with," Valeri said.
"I thought we were fantastic (against Adelaide), the boys were outstanding, our pressure was just unbelievable and we created so many chances.
"All we needed to do is put away one of those early chances and it might have been a completely different game.
"Now we're focussed on Melbourne City – we have been since the end of that game."
Victory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic will make his 229th Hyundai A-League appearance in the Derby, becoming the most capped player in the competition's history.
Victory and Melbourne City last met in Hyundai A-League 2015 Finals Series, when Victory prevailed 3-0 in front of 50,871 fans at Etihad Stadium to secure a Grand Final berth.
"It's big, it's massive – it's a special week," Valeri said of the Derby.
"There is a little extra buzz in the air and everyone talks about it, it's great to see.
"We just need to stay focused on the job at hand and not let our emotions take control of the game and that is something we have been very good at in the past."
